Understanding Your Safety

Is medical imaging safe?

Yes. Medical imaging is a vital tool for diagnosis and treatment. While some scans (like X-rays and CTs) use ionizing radiation, the doses are very low and strictly controlled. The benefit of an accurate diagnosis usually far outweighs the small theoretical risk.

How much radiation will I receive?

It depends on the exam. A chest X-ray delivers a tiny dose (similar to a few days of natural background radiation), while a CT scan is higher (similar to a few years of natural background). Use our Radiation Dose Calculator to get an estimate for specific procedures.

I am pregnant. Is imaging safe?

Some imaging (Ultrasound, MRI) uses no radiation and is safe. X-rays and CTs are avoided unless necessary. Always tell your doctor and radiographer if there is any chance you might be pregnant.
