Patient Discussion Guide: Medical Imaging
Use this guide to have a clear, informed conversation with your doctor about your upcoming scan.
Bring this sheet to your appointment to help you remember the important questions.
Questions to Ask Your Doctor
1. How will this scan help with my diagnosis or treatment?
Understand why the test is necessary and how the results will change your care plan.
2. Is there a radiation-free alternative?
Ask if an Ultrasound or MRI could provide similar information without radiation.
3. What are the specific risks for me?
Discuss any personal factors (like previous scans, age, or pregnancy status) that might affect your risk.
4. How should I prepare for the scan?
Ask about fasting, stopping medications, or clothing requirements.
💡 Remember: Medical imaging is a powerful tool. The risk of missing a serious diagnosis is
usually much higher than the small long-term risk from radiation. The goal is "Justification" — ensuring the
benefit weighs more than the risk.
